Gris Tourterelle is the warm grey I suggest to anyone who loves taupe but wants a little more spine. There is a whisper of lilac-grey in it that keeps it from looking like beige in disguise, and it pairs beautifully with chocolate, ivory and olive. It is the colour equivalent of a grey suit that somehow reads soft.
Eighteen centimetres tall and as wide, thirteen measured front to back – the compact Picotin 18, in the soft Taurillon Clemence grain. Gold hardware warms the tone further and looks especially right against the leather’s matte pebble, and the slouch that develops after a week of use is part of the design, not a defect.
Sunglasses ride uncased alongside a small wallet, keys and a phone. The unlined interior has become my favourite detail on these small Picotins: you feel the leather’s underside with your hand every time, and nothing rattles the way it does inside a coated lining.
Two caveats, honestly: warm mid-greys can read slightly dusty indoors, so this bag loves daylight more than lamplight, and the soft handles will darken gradually with hand oils. Neither has ever made me leave it at home.
In the end, what keeps it in rotation is temperament: it is a grey that behaves like a warm neutral, taking on the mood of whatever you wear while never losing its own character. A colleague once called it the colour of quiet money, and I have not found a better description since.
