Some colour combinations are best understood as weather. Écru, blue glacier and ardoise on this Mini Herbag Zip 20 read like a pale morning: cream ground, a wash of glacier blue, and a grey-slate line where the frame sits. Gold hardware is the unexpected sun in the equation, and it works, because the warmth keeps the cool trio from turning clinical.
Scale first, because it matters: the bag is 20 cm wide, 17 high and 7 deep, with a strap that lets it ride at the hip or across the body. The militaire canvas has a fine, dry hand, the hunter-cowhide flap is neatly turned and stitched, and the stud closure is small but definite, so you always know when it’s shut.
Carrying it is an exercise in editing. The essentials — phone, keys, cardholder, sunglasses without the case, a lip balm — occupy it fully and happily. I have also used it as a camera bag for a compact body, with the wrist strap coiled into the back pocket, and it behaved like it was designed for the job. The seven centimetres of depth keep everything on one level, so nothing hides.
Two notes in the interest of honesty: the glacier blue is far subtler in person than in most photographs, more grey-blue than sky, and écru canvas needs the occasional wipe around the corners where city air leaves its trace. Neither has changed my opinion. The bag is level-headed, pretty and unfussy, a rare trio.
