On a slate-grey bag, gold hardware doesn’t decorate, it glints, like the clasp on a jewel box left open a crack. That’s the effect here: the Mini Herbag Zip 20 in ardoise, whose militaire canvas and hunter-cowhide top share one cool grey tone, leaves the gold studs and handle fittings to provide the only warm note on the entire piece. The result is a small bag with the gravity of a grander one.
The measurements are 20 by 17 by 7 cm; the construction makes the most of them: a firm frame, a flap that folds crisply, edges turned without a ripple. Ardoise is a colour that photographs drily, so trust the description here: in person it has a soft blue cast, and the gold brings it alive.
Carried crossbody, it holds phone, cards, keys, a lipstick and a packet of tissues, the honest minimum-plus, and looks composed with anything from a trench to a knit dress. Held by the strap with the handle pressed flat, it passes at dinner. There’s no situation I’ve found where this bag looks wrong; that’s its particular talent.
Two fair notes: the grey canvas picks up faint whitish marks from walls and railings more than mid-tone shades do, so expect to brush it periodically, and the gold-tone finish will dull slightly over the years, which most owners quietly prefer. Neither is a fault. Both are just the bag living its life. I’d choose it again tomorrow, and I say that about very few things.
