Length is the whole story with the Maillon To Go. Twenty-four centimetres is more than twice a card holder’s reach, and that changes what the object is: not a stack of cards you live out of, but a long, flat wallet that swallows a phone first and then takes on the rest of the day.
Etoupe with gold hardware is the warmer read of this grey-brown: the gold lifts it towards brown in low light and keeps it from looking cold on a cafe table. The grain is heat-embossed and firm, so this long panel does not develop the wavy edges that softer leathers pick up in a pocket.
What it carries: a phone lying flat, cards stacked at one end, notes at the other, a key and a pair of coins in the shallow space that remains. Two and a half centimetres of depth is not generous, and that is deliberate – anything thicker stops being a wallet you enjoy handling.
My one frustration is the same as anyone’s with a piece this long: it dominates a jeans pocket, so it wants a coat, a bag, or a hand. As an evening clutch it is excellent, though, and the twenty-four centimetre frame looks intentional on a table next to a phone that is finally out of the way.
Four months in, the gold hardware still looks untouched and the Etoupe surface shows nothing but a soft highlight where the flap folds.
