Matte alligator is the subtlest expression of an exotic skin: the large plates are still there, but without gloss they read like carved stone instead of lacquer. Gris Neve, a snow grey, is the ideal color for it, because the matte surface softens the grey into something closer to bone.
The pochette measures 22 by 12 cm with a 7 cm depth and a single top handle. It carries a phone, cards, keys and a lipstick, and the flap closes over them with the turn-lock sitting flat. For a daytime ceremony or a lunch where a large bag is out of place, this is the shape I want.
With matte alligator the finish changes as you use it. Handling brings up a faint sheen along the flap and the top of the handle, so the bag slowly develops a patina where it is touched most. It is a beautiful process and it is irreversible, so if you need it to stay uniformly matte, that is not something you can maintain.
Alligator also wants to be kept out of strong sun and conditioned sparingly, once a year at most. Gris Neve hides marks well for a pale exotic.
One more observation from carrying it: Gris Neve in matte is at its best in winter light and looks slightly warmer under lamplight than in daylight, which is the opposite of most pale leathers. It is the quietest pale bag I own, and the one I trust most in a formal setting.
