I packed this Gris Etain Elan for a long weekend and it ended up being the only bag I took out of the hotel room. Gris Etain is a grey with a green-brown undertow – it works with black, camel or olive – and Madame calfskin gives it a smooth, slightly glossy surface that reads as understated in any light.
At 27 by 15 by 5 centimetres, it slips into the side of a carry-on and then does everything on the ground: breakfast, museum, dinner. The strap is long enough for crossbody wear, and without a top handle the profile stays flat against the body. The turn-lock is easy to operate one-handed, which matters when you are holding a coffee and a boarding pass.
Inside I keep a phone, passports and cards in a slim zip wallet, a lipstick, and a folded scarf when the evening turns cool. The single gusset means everything has to stack rather than spread, but the turn-lock closes cleanly at that load.
Two honest observations. Smooth calfskin holds shine well but shows water spotting if you are caught in a downpour – I keep a cloth in my travel kit and it has never been an issue. And silver hardware on grey is a cool, almost architectural combination; if you prefer warmth, there is a version of this bag with gold.
For a neutral that behaves in transit and still looks right at dinner, this is the one I grab first.
