Blue Agate is the colour of polished stone rather than sky – a deep, mineral blue that goes almost black in shadow and shows its true grey-blue self only in daylight. In Epsom it keeps a stoic, even surface, and the gold hardware warms the darkness like a low lamp in a stone room.
The Kelly 28’s 28 by 22 by 10 centimetres handle the daily haul and hold a formal line while doing it: wallet, phone, keys, sunglasses, and a slim notebook for meetings. The flap edges stay crisp because the embossed grain does not fray or relax, and the strap comes off when the bag needs to sit on a restaurant chair instead of on me.
In daily wear the colour is deceptively tough. Marks disappear into the deep tone, rain beads off the embossed surface, and the blue does not fade under sunlight the way some dyes do. It looks appropriate from a boardroom breakfast through to a late dinner, which is more range than most deep colours manage.
My honest caution concerns light, not damage: in low evening interiors this blue will read black, and anyone who bought it for the blue should know that half of its life is spent disguised. In sunlight, the reward is a depth you rarely see on a bag – closer to lapis than to navy.
For a colour that keeps a secret until noon, Blue Agate is worth the patience.
