Rouge Piment does not do subtle: it is chilli red, bright and confident, with a touch of orange in the sun and true red in the shade. In Box calf it arrives with a near-mirror sheen – the leather polishes like a patent shoe – and the gold hardware glints against it as though the bag were lit from inside.
Despite the drama it is still a working size. The Kelly 28 measures 28 by 22 by 10 centimetres and takes a slim wallet, phone, keys, sunglasses in a sleeve, and a lipstick in the zip pocket. I carry it by the top handle during the day and unclip the strap for evenings, and the turnlock has not loosened through either routine.
The Box calf reality, said plainly: fine scratches and rain spots are more visible here than on grained leathers, and this red will show any mishap at the corners. The compensation is that Box is the one leather that can be repaired and re-polished, and the red deepens into a rich, aged lacquer that grained leathers never reach.
I blot rain immediately, polish twice a year with a neutral cream, and let the bag tell its own story between services. A scratch or two is part of the contract you sign with this leather – and worth it.
For anyone who wants a red that behaves like a jewel without pretending to be one, this is the one.
