Rouge Sellier is the red a saddler would have chosen: deep, slightly oxblood, closer to a riding boot in November than to anything called bright. In Epsom it takes on the same polite rigidity as the rest of the family, and the Kelly 25 becomes, as I wrote in my notes at the time, the most grown-up red bag I have carried.
Against grey wool it is quietly extraordinary; against navy it is almost academic; against black it stops time in the most understated way. Gold hardware is essential here, warming the brown that lives inside this shade of red. It is the red I recommend to anyone who claims red is not for them.
Inside, the 25 x 17 x 7 cm dimensions hold exactly the essentials: phone, cardholder, keys and lipstick, with the zip pocket for a transit card and a flat bill or two. I never feel short of space in this bag because I never ask it for more than it advertises.
Durability is Epsom’s steady promise; rain, desks, taxi floors, the bag simply refuses to remember them. The one caveat worth stating: Rouge Sellier is a dark red, and dark reds can read almost black in bad light, which some buyers discover too late and dislike. If you want your red to announce itself at all hours, choose a brighter red. If you want a red that works like a secret, this is the deepest one of the family.
