Buying pink online is a gamble, so let me describe Rose Sakura precisely: it is the inside of a cherry blossom petal, a pale pink with a slight cool cast, closer to powder than to candy. Under heavy grey skies it can read almost white, which you will either love or need to know before ordering. In the vocabulary of pinks it is two shades quieter than the candies and one warmer than the paper whites.
The bucket it comes on is my favourite format for spring: eighteen centimetres wide, a touch under twenty with the loop, twelve deep. Clemence’s pebbled surface gives the pale pink a slight texture, so it does not look like icing, and the silver-tone hardware keeps everything cool and grown-up.
On a bright day it holds a cardholder, phone, keys, sunglasses and a paperback, and it looks best slung over a light trench or carried by the loop with a linen dress. It is the bag I take to lunch outdoors, where the colour finally shows what it is. With white denim it is a spring fixture; with grey wool it is a small argument for colour in winter.
Two honest notes. Pastel Clemence shows faint marks from denim and dark leather, so I store it in its dust bag and avoid new jeans. And if you were hoping for bubblegum, this is not it; look at Rose Confetti in the same shape. Sakura is for people who like their pink with the volume turned most of the way down.
