Gris Asphalte is the color of pavement after rain, and I mean that as praise. It is a deep, cool gray-black with a touch of blue when the light is flat, which makes it the most urban color in this range. Thirty centimeters wide, it reads modest until you pack it, and then it reads indispensable.
Vache Country’s firm grain keeps the dark gray looking sharp rather than soft, so the bag holds a clean silhouette against denim, wool and technical jackets alike. The silver snap is the only metal. This is the one I take when the forecast is uncertain, because firm leather handles weather with more composure than soft, and gray does not advertise a drizzle.
Loadout on a typical Wednesday: an e-reader, a paper diary, a phone, a charger pouch, keys and a wallet. Everything stands vertically inside, which keeps the bag slim against the body on a crowded metro, and the interior pocket holds a transit pass within arm’s reach of the turnstile.
One caution, honestly given: Gris Asphalte behaves like a very dark color, so fine dust and pale scuffing show up on it, and firm leathers scuff with a sheen rather than blending the mark away. A damp cloth and a little patience fixes most of it. In return you get a work bag that shrugs off winter and looks composed in every lobby it enters.
