Slate gray is the least decorative color I own, and for a working tote that is precisely the point. Ardoise is a cool gray with a hint of blue in it, the color of a sky before snow. Twenty-one centimeters tall, it stands upright next to a desk and looks like it belongs to someone organized. I mean that as a compliment.
The leather is Vache Country, firm with a tight natural grain, and it is the reason the bag keeps its rectangle whether it is full or half empty. Silver hardware is limited to the snap. The firmness also means Ardoise holds a crisp shape against wool coats in winter, which softer leathers cannot do.
What rides in it: a notebook, an e-reader, a phone, keys, a wallet and a compact umbrella in the wet months. The open top makes swapping between those things effortless when I am walking between meetings. There is an interior pocket for cards and a train ticket, and the base is wide enough for a folded scarf.
My honest reservation is not the bag but the color’s character. Ardoise will never be the star of an outfit. It is a background color, chosen for the days when you want the bag to do its job and stay quiet. If you want a tote that gets noticed, look at the greens and blues in this range instead. If you want one that works before coffee, this is it.
