Pure white leather on a small bag is a commitment, and I made it happily with Blanc. Where Craie is chalk with warmth, this is white with nothing behind it: crisp, clean and surprisingly easy to live with once you decide you are not going to treat it like porcelain.
Clemence’s grain is what makes it workable. The surface is pebbled rather than smooth, so the white reads as soft and textural, and small knocks disappear into the pattern. The bag itself is the familiar small Evelyne, sixteen centimetres tall, eighteen wide, five deep, with silver hardware that matches the coolness of the colour and a strap that adjusts from crossbody to shoulder.
Inside fits my light-day kit: phone, keys, a cardholder and a lip balm. I keep a cotton pouch in it for sunglasses on bright days. Anything beyond that starts to press against the leather, and a stuffed white bag is nobody’s friend, so I keep it honest and small.
Honest warning to end on: white Clemence is not waterproof in the way people hope. Rainwater is fine; a spill of coffee is a memory. I carry mine in the dry months and choose differently in monsoon weeks. In return, it is the single best bag in my collection for making scuffed trainers look deliberate.
The white bag that finally got used rather than shelf-sat, which is the whole point of buying a bag in the first place.
