Etoupe in the small size is a neutral that disappears into an outfit rather than interrupting it. I bought it to be the bag that finishes whatever I am wearing, and it has done that job every day for a year: with cream, with navy, with black and, most surprisingly, with red.
The taupe is neither warm nor cool, which is why it works so widely; in Clemence’s pebble grain it gains a softness that keeps it from looking corporate. The small frame measures 16 x 18 cm and stays just 5 cm deep, and the silver hardware keeps quiet, while the cut-out H is the only ornament on the leather.
Inside: my phone, a flat cardholder, keys and a lipstick, sometimes a rolled-up tote for shopping. Any more and the bag turns lumpy, so I have learned to travel small. On a walk or a long commute, the strap sits well across the body and the leather keeps it close to the hip rather than swinging.
Two honest notes. Clemence will soften the bag’s corners over time, which is why mine looks friendlier than it did new; and Etoupe in very pale light can look almost grey, so if you want an unmistakably brown bag, choose a different tone. If you want one that simply works, you already have it.
My recommendation for a first small Evelyne, without hesitation and without caveat.
