There is a shade of orange that everyone recognises without reading a label, and it lives on this flap. It is warmer than traffic-cone, softer than tangerine — the colour of a shaved pencil, of a fishing net at harbour. On a grey aeroplane morning it is the most cheerful object in the cabin, and I have never once boarded with it and been ignored.
Travel is its natural habitat: 24 cm wide by 15 tall, only five deep, so it slides into a seat-back pocket’s worth of space beside you and holds a phone, passport wallet, keys and a lipstick without ceremony. Silver hardware suits this orange more than most people expect — the cool metal steadies the warmth instead of fighting it.
Epsom keeps the colour vivid because the pressed surface reflects light evenly; there are no glossy hot spots where the leather curves, which is what makes oranges on smoother skins look occasionally plasticky. This one stays matte, saturated and alive, and it takes rain, tube carriages and tray tables without complaint.
Honest warning, and I mean it kindly: this is not a neutral under any definition. It will be the first thing anyone notices about you, and it will not fade politely into a mood board of beiges. If your wardrobe is built on quiet colours, the orange will be your one event of the day. That is exactly why I keep it.
