Etoupe is the colour that sits between grey and brown and refuses to commit to either, which is precisely why it works so hard. On Epsom calfskin the tone reads cool indoors and warmer in sunlight, and it flatters more skin tones than either a strict grey or a flat tan.
Build follows the Chypre pattern exactly: a broad vamp in Epsom, an adjustable strap over the instep, and the anatomical rubber sole that follows the arch with a low rubber base under the forefoot. Made in Italy in sizes 40 to 46, with a fit that has run true for me at my usual size.
Practically, etoupe is the sandal I take when I have no idea what I will be doing. It handles a business-casual lunch with stone chinos, then a beach walk in the same afternoon without looking wrong in either place. Because the leather is neutral, it also survives the whole summer without feeling like a seasonal novelty.
The trade-off: a mid-tone like etoupe shows nothing badly, but it does show everything a little. Scuffs read as faint light lines, oil from sunscreen leaves soft patches, and the grain holds dust in its texture. A dry brush weekly and a neutral cream twice a season keeps the colour even, and that is the entire maintenance schedule. Mine have been worn two summers running and the colour has deepened rather than faded, which is rare for a mid-tone. The Epsom has also resisted creasing across the vamp better than the softer calfskin pairs I own.
