The Calvi Duo in Ebene has been in my rotation for two winters, and it still surprises me how much use comes out of something this flat. Seven by ten centimetres, dark chocolate brown under a tight Epsom grain, with silver-tone trim that almost disappears because there is nothing to fasten: no flap, no snap, just the fold.
That fold is the entire idea. Two sleeves face opposite ways, so a card slides in on the left and another on the right without ever rubbing. I keep four cards on one face, three on the other, a folded note behind them and a spare studio key tucked where the leather doubles over.
Epsom is heat-embossed calfskin, which means the grain is pressed into the hide rather than left natural, and the result is stiff, matte and unusually hard to scratch. Coins, keys and a car fob share the same pocket all week, yet Ebene still looks like the day it arrived.
The trade-off is real: this leather does not melt the way lambskin does. For the first month the wallet stands slightly proud against a jacket pocket, and loaded with cards on both sides it reaches a chunky two centimetres, so front jeans pockets are out. In exchange, the corners stay square long after softer wallets have gone limp.
Brown shoes, a canvas tote, a wool coat – that is Ebene’s habitat. I reach for it on days when I want the thing in my hand to look thought through without announcing itself.
