There is a particular pleasure in a work bag that never asks for attention. I commuted for a month with this 37 Gold Bolide 31 — camel Epsom, gold hardware — and what I noticed most is what I did not notice: no slump when I set it down, no flap to hold open in the rain, no fiddling at the zip. You pack it, you zip it, you go.
The numbers: thirty-one centimetres long, twenty-five high, twelve wide, which is exactly the size where a 13-inch laptop, a pouch, a notebook and a slim bottle of water coexist without a fight. Epsom’s embossed grain keeps the domed shape honest even when the bag is nearly empty — a soft leather at this size can look deflated; this one never does.
The design is almost entirely leather — a full-width zip with a leather pull, a rolled top handle, a shoulder strap, very little metal — and on this colour the hardware nearly vanishes into the material, so the bag reads as one uninterrupted object rather than a bag with components.
Honest notes, two. Structure costs weight: loaded with a laptop this is a real carry, and Epsom offers no give against your side at the hip. Second, it will not collapse flat when you travel; it holds its volume in the overhead bin, which is either discipline or bulk depending on the day.
For someone who wants a bag that behaves like good office furniture, that is the whole pitch — and it is a better pitch than it sounds.
