Rose gold changes the temperature of black. With rose hardware the noir 40 stops being a night-sky object and starts feeling candlelit, which is a subtler shift than the photos suggest.
The size is the full 40 in Togo with rose gold hardware. It takes the laptop, the folio and a change of clothes, and in January it carried a dinner jacket folded flat, which is not something I expected a 40 to manage politely; the bag still reads formal enough for a dinner with a suitcase’s worth of things inside.
In use, the warm metal makes black look softer and slightly old-fashioned in the best sense; against a grey suit it is the only warm note in the room. Togo’s grain keeps the surface matte, so the rose gold does all the shining by itself. In lamplight it photographs like a black bag and reads, in person, like something kinder.
Honest notes: rose gold is the finish that shows smudges most clearly, and I keep a polishing cloth in the pocket the way I keep one for crocodile. Black Togo still blooms gray when scuffed and still picks up every speck of dust in a hotel room. And a full 40 is a commitment to its weight; this one more than most, because it invites formality.
For evening arrivals and winter weddings in other cities, it travels beautifully. It is the black 40 for people who do not quite want black.
