New Blue Jean is the colour of raw denim before the first wash, a clean mid-blue with a little grey in it. Paired with silver hardware it becomes the most casual Birkin in this batch, and I mean that as praise: it is a bag that works with a white shirt and jeans.
Twenty-five centimetres across, twenty high, thirteen deep, French Togo with silver-tone plates. The pebbled surface reads matte and slightly dusty in the best way, and it does not compete with the fabric you are wearing. The silver studs and plates give it a slightly utilitarian edge that matches the denim reference.
On a normal weekday it holds my phone, a card case, keys, a compact and a small pouch with earbuds. It is not a bag for a laptop, and I would not try to make it one, because the sides will bow and the flap will not sit flat.
A genuine caution for a blue like this: pale and mid-blue leathers in grained calf can show oil from hands along the flap edge over time, appearing as a slightly darker sheen. It is subtle and only visible at an angle, but it happens. Mine has softened at the base from being set down, and the grain there now reads slightly smoother than the flap.
Mine has taken two summers of sunlight and warmed a shade, which reads pleasantly with denim rather than against it. Hardware still crisp.
