Gold is the colour I recommend to anyone buying their first Birkin in a neutral, and the silver hardware on this one is what makes it read modern rather than borrowed from an older wardrobe. Cool-tone metal on a warm tan keeps the palette from going too sweet.
I took mine on a long weekend and it did everything: breakfast, a gallery, an early dinner. The interior swallowed a passport wallet, phone, compact and keys. The exterior is roughly a hand’s width across the base, which is why it never feels like luggage. Squared off at the base, it sits flat on a cafe table instead of tipping, which matters more than you would think.
Togo from France gives the tan a matte, slightly grainy surface. Sun exposure deepens it over the years, which I like; it also means the bag will not stay exactly the shade it is now.
That is the trade-off worth knowing. Untreated light-to-mid tan leathers shift colour with light and handling, and this one is no exception. If you want a hue that stays frozen, a coated or embossed leather is the safer choice, and this Togo is the opposite of that. Light tan also means the interior is easy to see into, so nothing gets lost at the bottom the way it does in a dark-lined bag.
Stitching is uniform along the flap and the hardware plates sit flush. Silver on tan is a pairing I would pick again without hesitation.
