Some pinks whisper through a wardrobe; Bubble Gum arrives with the door already open. It is a proper candy pink – cool, saturated and clearly in on the joke – and it has done more for my neutral outfits than any styling app ever did.
At 25 by 20 by 13 cm it is a small bag even by Birkin standards, so the colour stays one glorious exclamation rather than the whole sentence. It carries a phone, a cardholder, keys and a lip gloss, and the flap’s turn-lock is stiff enough at the start to reassure you that it will hold for years. On a grey day it does the work of a bouquet, without the water.
Togo’s pebbled surface gives the pink a soft, matte warmth – no patent shine, no Barbie gloss – and the gold hardware is exactly right against it, picking up the warmth of the dye rather than fighting it. Every edge, strap and bell is finished in the same tongue-in-cheek register.
Two honest caveats. A pink this decisive will not suit every room, and that is the point; know it before you buy it. And like all pale brights, it can pick up colour from dark denim and black linings, so treat the leather, wipe it after city days, and keep it away from the back of a new coat for the first month. Carried through a summer of weddings and birthdays, it has never once been the wrong guest. Looked after, it stays candy-fresh.
