Graphite is the colour of soft pencil lead – dark, slightly metallic, impossible to pin down. In cool light this bag is grey; in warm light it slides toward brown; at night it is simply black with expensive manners. One bag, three colours, no compromises made at checkout. The name is accurate in a second sense, too: this leather records marks, then quietly forgets them.
A compact 25-centimetre body with the customary twenty of height and thirteen of depth keeps it honest about its job: a phone, a charger, keys and a lip balm with room left for a folded document. The handle sits comfortably in the hand, and the bag balances on a knee without tipping, which is the small test I run on every candidate. The hardware sits close to the leather rather than standing off it, so the profile stays neat against a coat.
Togo from France gives Graphite its texture – a pebble grain that shatters the light into grey and bronze flecks, so the colour never turns muddy even in dull weather. The gold hardware is the warm half of the equation, echoing the bronze in the grain rather than contradicting the grey.
An honest caution: if you want a true, unmixed grey, Graphite will occasionally confuse you, because it never quite is one. It is a chameleon, and chameleons refuse to be pinned. Wear it with everything from denim to tailoring, and let it choose its own tone for the day.
