Gris Perle earns its name in the pebbling – across Togo’s grain the grey picks up a nacreous shimmer, pearl rather than pewter, so the bag looks lit from within on the dullest afternoons. It is the softest of the greys and, I think, the most forgiving to carry.
No longer than a forearm from wrist to fingertip, the 25 size is what I reach for on days that move from office to aperitivo without stopping home: a phone, a cardholder, keys and a small pot of mints go in, and a slim paperback goes on top for the metro. The single handle keeps one hand free at the bar.
Togo from France is supple from the start, and in this pale tone it shows the grain beautifully, like suede that decided to be polished. Choosing gold hardware over silver was the right call – the warm metal brings out the pearl’s creamier side, so the bag never turns icy even in grey weather. The straps are cut from the same soft hide, letting the grey carry on over the shoulder.
What to know before committing: pale grey shows smudges more than its dark relatives, so wipe the surface after busy days where hands and keys have been in and out. And the pearl sheen is subtle – in some artificial light it rests into plain grey, only to come back to life at the window. Judge it in daylight, not in a fitting room. It is my most-reached-for bag in spring, when pearl greys outrun every other colour outdoors.
