Rouge H is the red I would recommend to someone who says they do not wear red. It is an oxblood with brown in it, deep enough to pass as a dark neutral until light hits it, and gold hardware draws out the warmth in the dye.
Togo from France, twenty-five by twenty by thirteen centimetres, gold-tone plates and studs. The pebble grain gives this red a richness that smooth leather cannot, because the surface plays with light in tiny increments rather than one glossy sheet. The tone also moves with the light: near maroon in a dim room, brighter and more cherry outdoors.
My everyday contents in this size are a phone, a slim wallet, keys, a compact and a small pouch. It closes easily and the rolled handles are firm enough to grip without slipping down the arm.
A genuine warning on deep reds in this family: some will transfer onto pale fabrics in the first season, particularly where the bag rubs against your side. I keep mine off white linen and have had no issues after the first months. I would still avoid resting it against a pale leather sofa in the first month, purely as a precaution, and I have never had a problem since.
Beyond that it has been a low-maintenance bag, easy to like with camel, navy, grey and denim. The stitching is even along the flap and the hardware has worn well.
