Alligator from Mississippi has a scale pattern that no embossed calfskin fully copies – irregular, tight, and faintly glossy at the crown of each scale – and on a wallet in Beton it reads almost like polished ivory. The Bearn’s long strap closure runs across the front and tucks under the signature bar, so the whole piece stays flat and neat against a pocket or a bag lining.
Seventeen and a half by nine by five centimetres sounds modest, but the gusset is what makes this more than a card case. One deep compartment takes notes and receipts, a second holds cards, and the gusseted coin section opens wide enough to see what you are doing rather than fishing blind. I have run a full week out of this wallet alone – cash, eight cards, coins, a couple of folded notes to self – and it also drops into a small evening bag without bulging the silhouette.
Trade-offs, honestly: alligator scales are tough, but the edges between them can lift slightly if the wallet lives in a tight back pocket, and a pale Beton finish picks up denim transfer. Keep it in a jacket or bag pocket instead, wipe it with a dry cloth weekly, and the colour will hold for years.
The feel in the hand is what keeps me coming back – cool, slightly waxed, the scales catching light as it opens.
