Ardoise means slate, and this grey means it: cool, stormy and faintly blue, the colour of rooftops above Paris on a wet morning. It is the most atmospheric of all the greys in the range, and gold hardware against it looks like light caught in clouds.
Eighteen centimetres from edge to edge, thirteen through the depth, in pebbled Taurillon Clemence, which gives the cool slate tone a soft, almost weathered surface. In flat light it reads graphite; in rain it turns blue; in sun it shows the grey underneath everything.
Phone, keys, a card wallet and a compact ride inside, and the bag handles drizzle better than most I own – though the leather still prefers a wipe when I get home. Slate greys are the most forgiving neutral for city wear, because they match both the weather and the wardrobe.
If there is a trade, it is mood: Ardoise is a bag for people who like their colours with cloud cover, and it will never be the cheerful one in the closet. That said, on the right grey coat it makes the whole outfit look deliberate – which I consider a fair exchange.
My parting advice is to give it weather, not protection: Ardoise looks its best coming in from the cold, slightly damp around the handle, like a coat hung by the door. It is a bag for living in a real city, and it knows it.
