Ask five people to describe etoupe and you will get five answers: mushroom, grey, greige, taupe, the colour of wet sand. It is the shade I pack when I don’t know what a trip will ask of me, because it refuses to be either cool or warm and therefore goes with nearly everything I own.
On the Elan, the proportions do quiet work too. Twenty-four centimetres wide, fourteen tall, eight deep — that depth is the point of this cut. A passport case fits upright next to a phone, earbuds, a cardholder and a small tube of hand cream, and the long flap closes flat over all of it. I have tested that claim on a nine-hour flight with a paperback tucked in as well.
Epsom takes etoupe beautifully because the pressed grain scatters light evenly. The embossing is shallow, almost like fine canvas, so the surface stays matte enough to look casual with denim and refined enough for a meeting the same afternoon. Rain beads off rather than soaking in, which matters when a city decides to surprise you.
The one thing to know is that etoupe reads grey in daylight and browner at night, so it can seem like two bags. And light neutrals always deserve a little vigilance with new dark denim. Gold hardware keeps the whole thing warm rather than clinical — that is why I chose this version over the silver.
