Gris Mouette is named for the gull, and in daylight you can see why: it is a grey with enough blue in it that it sits happily next to denim, stone and slate, then turns quiet and almost taupe under indoor light. I test greys this way – a colour that holds interest in both lights is worth owning.
Epsom gives the shade its evenness; there is not the slightest variation across the flap, which lets the silver H and the bag’s clean geometry carry the whole design. Squeeze the numbers and it is the middle size in the line, which I think is the most balanced – the flap reads as a proper panel rather than a lid, and the hardware is not oversized.
What goes in: phone, a slim card wallet, keys, lip balm, compact, folded shopping tote. The fixed strap hangs it across my body at exactly elbow height, which is my favourite place for a bag when I am carrying coffee. The flap opens to three-quarters with one hand, and the clasp seats back with a click.
A note on how the colour behaves: blue-greys shift with what you wear, so on a green or olive outfit this bag looks slightly colder than expected. I keep it in the blue-slate-denim quarter of my wardrobe and it never misbehaves. It also hides rain marks better than any true grey – worth knowing in a city.
