Autumn is when I stop pretending I want bright bags, and Ecorce is the colour I come back to. It is a bark brown, a little grey in the shadows and warmer in sun, and the etoupe enamel fittings keep the whole thing tonal instead of shiny. I carried it through a week of rain, wool coats and early evenings, and it never asked for attention it did not get anyway.
19 cm of width, 15 of height and 4 of depth, so it hides under a trench without breaking the line of the coat. Inside: phone, keys, a cardholder, a lipstick, plus a small tin of mints that has lived there since October. The flap drops open flat, which is more useful than it sounds when you are wearing gloves.
Epsom in a dark colour is close to maintenance-free. The pressed grain shrugs off wet leaves and leather-on-leather rub, and the shape stays square across seasons. The enamel clasp gives just enough sheen to keep the bag from reading like a briefcase, and the etoupe tone against the darker brown is a grown-up pleasure.
Honest note: this is a low-contrast bag, and anyone who likes hardware to pop should look at a gold clasp instead. I like that it whispers, and my winter wardrobe agrees with me. The Epsom has proven itself again this season, and the flap still lines up dead true across the front. In a wardrobe of sensible decisions, this is the one that simply feels right.
