Black outside, ecru wool inside: this is the shearling Chypre for people who want the warmth without the rustic look. From across a room it reads as a plain black sandal; the surprise is entirely on the inside, where almost nobody expects fleece.
The outer is calfskin rather than suede, which gives it a firmer, more polished surface with a black calfskin patch set into the insole. Inside, ecru woolskin covers both the insole and the lining, and the anatomical rubber sole sits at a half-inch with an adjustable strap above. Sizes 36 to 41.
I wore these through a rainy November week of errands, and the leather upper handled damp pavements far better than suede would have, wiping dry in a minute. The wool kept my feet warm without the clamminess that closed shoes develop, and the toe stayed open enough to stay comfortable indoors.
It is an easy shoe to build around: black trousers, a camel coat, chunky socks and it looks like you meant it. The ecru interior shows as a thin line along the straps, which reads as a detail rather than a colour clash, and the black insole patch inside stops the wool from looking generic.
Two things worth knowing. First, woolskin is warmer than it looks – these are genuinely cold-weather sandals, not a year-round pair. Second, the light lining will take on a grey cast where your heel rests unless you let the shoe air between wears. Rotate them and they stay fresh.
