Craie is chalk, and the name is honest about it: not a paper white but a soft, faintly warm off-white with just enough depth to avoid looking clinical. On this pouch the pale leather and the silver zip pull give the whole thing an almost porcelain look, which is a strange thing to say about leather and pleasant to carry.
Twelve centimetres of height and a slim body mean it holds the small version of an evening: phone, cards, keys, a compact, a folded note. Used inside a larger bag it is the thing that stops keys scratching a phone screen; used alone it is enough for a dinner or a walk, and the zip stays smooth at the corners where the leather has taken on a little give.
The straightforward trade-off is that Craie does not forgive much. Every fingerprint on the zip end, every smear from a hand that has touched a railing, shows up until it is wiped. A dry cloth once a week is the whole routine, and a pencil eraser handles the odd grey scuff on Evercolor surprisingly well. Dark denim and this pouch should not be introduced to each other.
In return you get a pouch that lightens a dark bag from the inside and looks clean and deliberate on any table, and the silver hardware suits it exactly. It is the pouch I hand to friends who ask what is worth buying first.
