Arctic grey was a colour name I distrusted until I saw it under winter daylight, where it turned out to be exact: a pale, slightly blue grey, cool as a February morning and just as unsentimental. This pair leans into the mood, with suede goatskin and calfskin kept in the same key throughout.
The sole runs about an inch and a half and carries black and grey inserts, black at the front, grey at the back, which grounds the pale upper and gives the shoe a horizon line. Grey lamb’s skin fills the insole and lining, the recycled black fabric ribbon handles the heel, and the box includes one white and one Arctic-grey pair of laces, effectively two degrees of winter. Made in Italy, men’s 40 to 46.
I wear the grey laces with charcoal wool and switch to white when the pair needs to look brighter than the weather. The calf panels wipe clean, the suede panel brushes clean, and the whole shoe weighs little for the support it offers.
Honest note from experience: pale greys read differently indoors and out, so meet this one in daylight if you can. And nothing about the pair enjoys heavy rain, the suede least of all, so treat the forecast as part of the decision to wear it. On dry winter days, though, pale grey against dark wool is worth the weather watching, and the black front insert keeps the scheme from floating away.
