Etoupe is the taupe that unties colour questions. Grey-brown, a shade that sits between office and weekend, with pale stitching tracing the edges so the bag has a drawn outline instead of a soft blur. I keep one by the door precisely because it ends arguments with everything already hanging in the wardrobe.
There is a reason this finish is the practical favourite among people who actually use their bags: it does not fight prints, it does not look precious next to denim, and it reads warm beside cream and cool beside charcoal. Gold hardware tilts the whole thing a degree warmer, which is why I would choose the gold-tone metal on this colour rather than silver.
Loaded, a 35 is a portable desk. Mine runs with a tablet, a document folder, a pouch of chargers, a card case, keys and a water bottle laid on its side along the base; the 18 cm depth is what makes that possible without a bulge appearing at the front panel.
The trade-off with a pale taupe is edge grime. It arrives slowly, mostly along the handle bases and the corners, and it wipes off with leather cleaner if you catch it early rather than six months late. Do not park the bag on newspapers. Togo’s grain handles the rest – fingerprints simply do not sit on it.
After a season the handles darken very slightly where my hands rest. On this colour that kind of honest wear suits the bag rather than spoiling it.
