There is a kind of deep red that only shows itself in winter, when it slides past black in low light and then reveals a garnet glow under a streetlamp. Rouge Grenat is that red, and with silver hardware it leans cool and slightly aristocratic rather than festive. I carried it to a late dinner in January and spent most of the evening noticing it against the dark room.
In a 35, the colour has enough surface to be legible without being loud, and Togo’s pebbled grain stops it looking like a flat block of colour. The leather’s softness matters here too: this is a bag that folds slightly into your side when you carry it in the crook of your arm, rather than standing away from the body.
Contents on the days I use it: a wallet, phone, keys, glasses, a compact, a lipstick, a small notebook and a folded scarf, with the interior pockets taking care of cards, tickets and receipts. A slim laptop will go in without much argument, though I would not make a habit of it.
The one honest quirk: dark reds can look almost brown under warm indoor lighting, and photographs tend to flatten the difference between Rouge Grenat and a plain burgundy. In person it is richer. If you dress in creams, greys and denim rather than brights, this is one of the easiest reds to wear.
