Silver hardware on 37 Gold is the less-traveled road: the classic warm tan, cooled down. I bought it almost as an experiment and ended up preferring it; the bag reads younger, and the gold hardware version now feels like somebody else’s.
It is the full-size Togo build with palladium hardware; laptop, folio, chargers and a change of clothes all fit without a plan, in a working bag that happened to pick a holiday color. I have carried it to a design fair, a wedding and a rain-soaked market in one season.
In use, the silver cools the tan toward stone and keeps the bag from skewing formal; with denim and grey knitwear it looks especially right, and in summer light the combination is almost bleached. The grain holds up to daily handling, and the palladium has one pleasant side effect: the bag reads fresh even after two years of use.
Honest notes: silver with warm tan divides people, and I understand the objection; the pairing is a little unconventional, and if you love the old-world read, choose gold hardware. Palladium also shows hairlines, and 37 Gold takes directions from denim and ink. And full, the 40 is heavy, like its siblings.
For three seasons out of four it is my default big bag. It shows a 40 does not have to look like a briefcase, and in photographs the pairing is quietly striking, which is the best kind of striking.
