Chocolat is the brown of good dark chocolate just before it melts – warm, deep, with red in its shadow – and in Epsom it takes on a firm, almost matte sheen that lets the colour do all the talking. I wore this Kelly 28 on a late-autumn train commute for a month, and it behaved like a dark neutral with a dessert’s warmth.
Epsom’s embossed grain is the practical half of the story: the surface stays even and firm, wipes clean after a coffee splash, and holds the 28 by 22 by 10 centimetre silhouette upright on the seat beside me. Inside go the compact wallet, phone, keys, sunglasses and a small pouch, with the strap detachable for dinner.
The brown deepens subtly with handling where I grip the handle, more slowly than smooth calfskin would, because the embossing resists absorbing oils. That is worth knowing if you were hoping for the fast, burnished patina of a softer leather – Epsom simply will not give it to you.
Gold hardware is the traditional pairing and the right one: against this brown, silver would look colder and more modern, while gold completes the warmth of the whole picture. In low evening light the bag reads almost black-brown, and in daylight the chocolate comes forward.
Worn with charcoal, oatmeal or tweed, it is my pick for the months when black feels too hard-edged.
