Malachite is a saturated, mineral green named for the stone, and Epsom is the right canvas for it: the embossed grain keeps the colour dense and even, with no gloss to dilute it, so the bag reads like a polished slice of the mineral itself. In daylight it is unmistakably green; at night it sinks into forest darkness and the gold hardware takes over.
At 28 by 22 by 10 centimetres, this Kelly 28 carries the daily set with room to spare and keeps its architectural line while doing it – flap square, base flat, strap detachable for the dinner table. The gold hardware is the traditional pairing for a green this deep, and the contrast is warm against cool, like brass on a garden gate.
In use, Malachite is easier than its boldness suggests. The surface wipes clean after travel, rain does not spot it, and scuffs vanish into the embossing. It is also surprisingly good with black, which swallows most greens; against black this one glows quietly instead.
My one caveat is honest and personal: a green this saturated is a commitment. There are mornings I want to be invisible, and Malachite does not offer that option – it is noticed in lifts, meetings and restaurants by people who never otherwise comment on bags.
For the days you want colour to do the introducing, this is the green that never retreats.
