Madame calfskin has the smoothest face of any leather in my cupboard. It is pressed rather than embossed, so there is almost no grain to feel — just a fine, even surface that reflects light in one clean sheet instead of scattering it. In 46 Ebene, the darkest brown the range offers, that surface looks like polished chestnut until it turns and reads black.
Gold hardware over Ebene is a warm, old-fashioned pairing and I mean that as praise. There is no pattern in the leather competing with the metal; the only details on the whole bag are the clasp, the strap anchors and the shape itself, so each one has to be right, and they are.
At 19 x 12 x 5.5 cm the inventory is a phone, a cardholder, keys and a lipstick. I wear it to dinner with a grey coat, to meetings with charcoal, and to anything where I want to look resolved rather than dressed up.
The honest trade of a smooth leather is memory. A deep scratch cannot hide in grain the way it would on Epsom; it lives on the surface. In a year I have collected one light scuff near the base, which has already darkened into the colour, but I do keep keys on a separate ring now.
If a faultless surface matters to you, this is the most elegant way to get one.
