Box calfskin is the classic among classic leathers, and Bordeaux is its most natural colour: a deep wine red that looks nearly black indoors and reveals its red only in good light. I have carried this bag for months, and the leather has already changed, softer sheen on the flap, a deeper tone on the panels that see the sun, which is exactly what Box does. If you want a bag that records your use, this is the material.
Because Box is smooth and glazed, it shows scratches honestly: fingernails leave faint lines, and then, with a rub of the thumb, most of them warm away. That responsiveness is what generations of owners have loved about it. Gold hardware matches the mood, and the 19cm proportions look almost like a miniature antique in the best sense.
The practical load is phone, cardholder, keys and lipstick, carried flat and light. Box has almost no natural stretch, so the interior keeps exactly the shape it was given, which keeps a small bag honest.
Wet weather is the one real enemy: smooth glazed calf can water-spot, so I keep a cloth handy and avoid downpours. Treated with that one caution, Box Bordeaux is the most characterful leather in this catalogue, and I do not say that lightly.
I would not call it a beginner’s leather, and I would not want it to be; the point of Box is that it expects a little attention and repays it in kind.
