My first serious bag was brown, and decades and many colors later I still think chestnut is the smartest place to start. Alezan is that brown at its best — a lit, polished chestnut with the warmth of old furniture and none of the redness that ruins lesser tans — and on the Garden Party’s generous body it looks like it has always belonged in the room.
Negonda’s tight embossed grain takes this color the way houndstooth takes grey: quietly, completely. The matte surface means no glare when the bag sits under office lights, and the leather is thick enough to hold the tote’s shape through a full day of being packed and unpacked. The silver hardware reads as a deliberate cool note against the warm hide, a pairing I would choose again on any brown.
Days with this bag tend to run long. Documents and a tablet on the way in, a tablet swapped for a book on the way out, a bottle of wine added on the way home on Fridays. Everything fits standing up, nothing has to be arranged, and the handles — worn briefly on the elbow when both hands are full — have stayed firm and unpuckered.
The single caveat is tonal: Alezan has a formal streak, and against very casual palettes — bright sneakers, loud fleece, sporty backpacks — it can look like the one overdressed member of the group. Pair it with denim and a white shirt instead, and it relaxes into exactly what it is: a brown bag that will outlast most of your wardrobe.
