Ask me which color to start with and I will say etoupe, every time. It is the gray-brown of a well-worn trench coat, and it shifts with the light: warm in the sun, cooler indoors, at ease beside navy, black, cream or denim. The Garden Party 30 is thirty centimeters across the base, twenty-one tall and thirteen deep. Big enough for a real day, small enough to ride on the forearm.
Negonda calfskin is the leather here, a soft pebbled country calf with an irregular natural grain and a matte finish. It creases the way fabric does, gently. Silver hardware is kept to the snap tab at the top and nothing else, and I like that restraint, because on this bag the leather is the detail. The woven lining wipes clean and does not snag on wool gloves.
The open top is the whole point. No zip, so a folded umbrella, a slim notebook and a water bottle all drop in without a wrestling match. On a normal weekday mine holds a phone, a card holder, keys, lipstick and sunglasses in a soft case, with room left for a scarf when the weather turns. The inside pocket takes the small things that would otherwise scratch the leather.
The honest note is the opening itself. In proper rain I tuck this bag under my coat or share my umbrella, because a shower will find everything inside it. Etoupe is forgiving for a light neutral, far more so than cream, but it is not a color for gravel paths and sticky hands. A wipe with a soft cloth every few weeks keeps it honest.
