Gris Tourtelle is the color of weathered stone, and it is the softest neutral in this range. Pale dove gray with nothing sharp in it, it lifts a black outfit the way a silk scarf does, and on the 30 it looks serene rather than solemn. Thirty centimeters across, with a calm that comes from having nothing to prove.
Negonda calfskin, pebbled and matte, gives the gray a softness that suits the color; a harder finish would make it look clinical. Silver appears only at the snap, and it nearly vanishes against the pale gray. This is a spring and summer bag in my rotation: trench coats, white denim, linen shirts and pale knitwear all sit comfortably around it.
What I actually carry in it: a thin novel, a sunglasses case, a small cosmetics pouch, wallet, phone and keys. The open top lets me find the novel without unpacking everything above it, and the interior pocket takes the loose things that would otherwise float around the base. The open form also makes it the easiest bag I own to pack at speed, which counts for more than elegance on a busy morning.
The honest warning concerns denim and any new dark garment. Pale gray leather picks up dye transfer faster than any other shade I own, and one long walk in new raw denim left a faint blue cast on the back panel. It cleaned off. Wear this one against lighter fabrics and it will stay immaculate for years.
