Saddle red is deeper than true red, closer to oxblood in low light, and it carries a seriousness that cherry tones never do. Rouge Sellier is the colour I chose for the years when I wanted a red bag but not a cheerful one, and on the twenty-nine centimetre Evelyne it lands exactly right.
The leather is Taurillon Clemence, soft and thick with a pebbled surface, and the deep dye shows the grain as a quiet texture rather than a pattern. Under a lamp the bag glows softly; in daylight it reads almost burgundy. It is one of those colours that photographs differently every hour, which is why I have never grown tired of looking at it. Up close the dye is deep and even, with no patchiness, and the matte surface has stayed calm through rain and shine.
Capacity suits a full day out: phone, zip wallet, keys, a compact, sunglasses, a small notebook, and a folded umbrella when the forecast turns. The strap is woven canvas with leather ends and adjusts quickly, and the open top means my phone is never more than a reach away. The rear pocket keeps tickets and cards apart from the main compartment.
Gold-tone hardware gives the dark red a refined edge. The honest note: depth of colour means stains and marks are almost invisible, but the leather can look dry at sharp creases, so it appreciates an occasional conditioning more than the lighter shades do.
