Ebene is the colour I recommend to anyone who wants a single bag to cover a train commute and a dinner reservation on the same day. It reads near-black in low light and shows its true, dark-chocolate brown in daylight, which keeps it from ever feeling flat.
The Evelyne 23 measures 23 cm across and 23 cm tall, with 7.5 cm of depth that lets the bag hold its shape when set down but flatten against the body when worn. Taurillon Clemence’s pebble grain is soft enough to drape, and on a dark colour the texture is where all the visual interest lives. The bright gold hardware gives it the one glint it needs, and the cut-out H is the only other detail on the leather.
Mine travels with a passport wallet, phone, compact, keys and a pair of thin gloves in winter; in summer the same bag takes a phone, a cardholder, lipstick and sunglasses instead. It never looks overstuffed, partly because anything soft simply settles into the base.
Honest trade-off: dark Clemence hides scuffs beautifully, but the gold fittings are the first thing to collect micro-scratches, and they show on a polished surface. Mine has been rained on, wiped and used hard for a season and still looks new from arm’s length.
A quiet bag in a colour that answers to almost everything, which is the whole case for Ebene.
