Etain is the cooler sibling of Etoupe, and if you have ever hesitated between them, the question to ask is what you wear more: denim and charcoal, or camel and cream. Denim wins in my house, so Etain lives in my rotation and the taupe tones belong to another wardrobe entirely.
The colour on this Evelyne 23 is a true metal grey, the name means tin, and Clemence texture gives it a velvet quality that flat greys never have. The silver hardware reads as part of the colour scheme rather than an accent, and the front face stays pleasingly square at 23 by 23 cm.
Inside goes my daily kit: phone, cardholder, keys on a small clip, sunglasses in a soft pouch and a compact mirror. The 7.5 cm gusset means I can add a folded umbrella when the forecast asks for it. Worn crossbody, the bag rides close and never swings on stairs.
Honest note after a year: this is the subtlest bag I own, which cuts both ways. It photographs dull, reads almost anonymous in a crowd, and will not earn you a compliment in the street. What it does is finish an outfit without ever fighting it, and the same bag in a louder colour quietly stopped being used after a season.
Etain is for the person who dresses in thirds: jeans, a shirt and one good bag that does the rest.
