There are pink bags that apologize and pink bags that do not, and Rose Mexico is firmly in the second camp. This is the pink of bougainvillea rather than bubblegum, and on the first warm Saturday of the year it is the bag I carry to the market, to a late brunch, to a friend’s birthday, anywhere a grey tote would feel like giving up.
In Clemence, that bright color gains depth; the pebbled grain scatters the light, so the pink never looks flat or plasticky. Sixteen centimeters high and eighteen wide, with a five-centimeter base, it lies trim against the body and takes a phone, a card case, keys and a lipstick without strain.
Nothing is stitched between the inside of this bag and the back of the leather, so a leaky pen or an uncapped hand cream is a genuine risk; I keep both in a small pouch and advise you to do the same. That same rawness is why the bag weighs so little and folds so softly when you set it down beside you.
Silver hardware keeps the color sharp and casual rather than sweet, and the strap adjusts without tools. Worn across the body, the bag has become my test of a good summer outfit: if the pink looks wrong with it, the outfit is wrong. It has failed me exactly once, and I have since retired that jacket.
