Black, cream, black: this is the most graphic Herbag in the batch, and the cream body against black leather reads almost like a two-tone jacket. It is the bag I take to things where I would like it noticed that I made an effort, without any of the work being visible. A friend calls it the piano bag, and I have stopped correcting her, because she is right. It is the happiest accident in my bag rotation.
Underneath the drama it is the same dependable machine: a canvas body cradled in a leather frame, a zip across the top, straps at the front. The body holds a notebook, a wallet, keys, a phone and a folded scarf, and the flat profile keeps it close through subway doors and small elevators.
The cream canvas is the honest problem. It collects the city on its lower half, the dust and the doorways and the taxi seats, and a damp cloth every weekend is not optional if you want the contrast to stay crisp. This is not a low-maintenance bag, but nothing else in my closet looks like it.
Silver hardware keeps the scheme cool and lets the two blacks frame the cream without ornament. Worn against an all-black outfit it is the most striking thing I own; worn against beige it turns gentle. The bag is whatever the rest of you decides, and it makes that decision look easy. I bought it expecting a statement and ended up with a staple.
