Ebene with Rouge H is a quiet trick of a bag: dark brown canvas whose red shows only at the trim, the strap ends and the leather edges. You see brown at ten meters and red at one, and that slow reveal is worth the trouble of owning something this understated. It is a bag that rewards a second look.
The build is the standard Zip format, canvas seated in a hunter cowhide top, thirty-one centimeters wide and twenty-five tall, ten deep, zipped across the mouth and adjusted by hand. The brown leans warm in daylight and almost black in a restaurant, which makes it one of the easiest bags I own to dress around. It carries a paperback, glasses, a water bottle and a folder of papers, and the body stays flat even when it is half empty.
An honest note about that red trim: Rouge H cowhide darkens with handling, and after a year of daily use mine is a deeper red than the day it arrived. I would not trade the year back. If you want the red to stay factory-fresh, handle the bag by the body and not the edges.
Gold hardware completes the scheme, and the result is the most classic-looking combination in my wardrobe, in the original sense of classic. Worn with a navy suit on Monday and denim on Saturday, it has an opinion about neither. Nothing else I own is this agreeable this often.
