In Epsom, the Kelly Elan stops being a soft bag. Epsom is heat-embossed calfskin — the fine regular grain you can see and feel is pressed into the leather, which makes it firm, light and remarkably resistant to scratches and water. In Craie, that rigour reads as porcelain: a chalky off-white over a crisp, flat body, with silver hardware as the only decoration. The 27 cm length lies across the body like a folded letter.
What goes in for me: phone, cardholder, keys, and a pair of glasses without their case — Epsom’s structure means the bag does not collapse onto its contents, so nothing gets squeezed. The flap holds a sharp edge along its whole length, which is the Epsom signature; open it and the interior is as ordered as a cabinet drawer.
Honest notes. Firm means firm: this is not a bag you stuff or squash, and it does not soften into your shape the way a calf bag eventually will. And Craie in any embossed leather shows dirt in the grain’s valleys, so clean it occasionally with a soft brush and mild soap rather than wiping hard. Done right, Epsom in a pale colour stays pale for years — few leathers can make that claim.
For summer tailoring and white shirts, it is the most composed bag on this page. For a flat bag, it has an unusual talent for looking organised even when it is not.
